Volkswagen Make a Concept E-Bike And Its...OK.

German auto giant Volkswagen may not seem like a company that has a strong interest in environmentalism or in advocating for zero-emissions transportation, but they’re trying to change the public’s perception, and one of the ways they’re doing it is by attempting to produce more electric cars and electric mobility concepts.

At Volkswagen’s DRIVE exhibit in Berlin, they’ve shown off new technologies from all of the Volkswagen brands (Audi, Porsche, etc.) and have also announced a new electric bike concept with a VW-built mid-drive motor and an automatic transmission.

The Volkswagen e-bike’s automatic transmission has only one system rivalling at the moment: Bosch’s eShift.

The concept is visually similar to Stromer’s ST2 and Kalkhoff’s Integrale models, and like those models, sports a battery that is hidden in the downtube.

The bike is also equipped with antilock brakes, an industry first for electric bicycles. Though Volkswagen has produced multiple electric bike models in the past, this concept is unlikely to see production as it would likely cost in excess of £10,000.
