All of These Ebikes Are the Same Power!

You are probably reading this title thinking I was a madman, trying to tell you that a 250w, 350w and 500w ebike are all the same power but that is what I am doing. While I know these are not the clearest images of these e-bikes look at the size of the rear-hub motor. Spoiler alert, they are all the same size, but more importantly than that, they are all the same motor drive exactly. Each one is a 500w 48V Brushless Direct Drive Hub Motor from the same manufacturer. But here is a real mind blower for you, you can even get more power out of it than the suggested 500w! Let me explain what is happening here…

Living here in the UK there is supposed to be laws and regulations that prevent an e-bike manufacturer from selling an e-bike above the UK laws and recommendations amount of 250w. But there is a shocker for you, manufacturers don’t make 250w only motors! More often than not it is a 350w motor that is limited by the capacity of the battery, or the controller. They do this to get around UK laws and make the sellers happy, but it’s simply not true. Just because they slap a sticker or print on the hub motor saying it is limited to 250 doesn’t mean it is.

But if it’s only 350w I hear you cry, how can it also be a 500w motor? That is because these motors are often tested from 350w – 500w meaning they are all capable of handling that amount of power, but they are just limited or the seller simply lies about what it can do!

Sure, the frames are all different, the overall styles of these e-bikes are different, but their motors are definitely the same hub drives from the exact same manufacturer. Please note here that it doesn’t mean they are all illegal as a 250w limited e-bike is still legal under UK law. But the difference between them could be something as simple as a sticker (like the ones you can buy on eBay as seen in the image), or even as meaningless as the words on a website.
