Court Fines Man for Riding a 250w E-bike Without a Licence

It is sensational seeking headlines like that that leave people feeling confused and scared to ride their e-bikes, even being put off buying an e-bike in the first place. The story goes that a 27-year-old man from Hereford, England was fined by magistrates for riding without insurance or a licence. But the e-bike in question was a 250w folding one. If you have carefully read the UK laws and regulations regarding e-bikes you are probably as confused as we are about this story.

The good news is we can easily answer this by looking at the e-bike itself. It was a MoovWay 250w folding e-bike. Well…that is what the title suggests it is anyway. In reality, because it doesn’t have pedals it is classed as an electric moped despite being advertised as an e-bike. Add the confusing headline designed to get those clicks and you have your answer as to why it occurred. Sadly “Court Fines Man for Riding a 250w Electric-Moped Without a Licence” isn’t quite as sensation, even if it is more to the truth.

When you read headlines like this it can leave you worried about buying an e-bike, but that is why we are always happy to answer any question you might have over on the contact page. In the meanwhile, if you see/read any other stories like this do let us know in the comments below.
